john&betty started as a collaboration between two friends with a shared love of glamour & an obsession with the the notion that ugly is beautiful. We make awkward clothes for beautiful girls – dresses and intimates that restrict and accentuate, and bizarre separates that go with everything. Our clothes come in one size – one size too small. We encourage the squeeze, the suck, the pain and the discomfort of fashion. Our emphasis is on quality construction and finish, using both traditional and experimental methods to build our unique pieces.

As well as tailoring,  pieces are glued, sprayed and tied together – all whilst retaining a high-end finish to the garment. We like to makes things uncomfortable by subverting traditional textile contexts: plastic, latex and leather feature heavily in the range. Powernet and P.V.C keeps things interesting.

Our debut collection is inspired by narcissism, sexuality, awkward moments & american dollar bills. The originality of our designs stem from our eclectic influences, which are carefully woven through the story of each design. We are planning a launch for a collection which is set to be a small and intimate event held at The Cherry Bar in January 2011. We plan to present our debut collection as an exciting multimedia exhibition in collaboration with other local artists and musicians.
